Chelsea Land Morgan Rogers in British Record £117m Transfer

Chelsea have pulled off one of the most stunning moves of the transfer window, completing the signing of Aston Villa and England midfielder Morgan Rogers for a British record £117 million. Rogers returned from the United States on Monday after representing England at the World Cup, underwent a medical in London, and put pen to paper on a six-year contract with a club option for an additional season. “I’m joining the biggest club in London,” Rogers said in his announcement video. “The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward is something I want to be a part of. I think it was just perfect for me. I just can’t wait to get going.” The deal materialized in just 48 hours after England’s World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina last Wednesday. Chelsea had tracked Rogers for over two years and quietly made him their top attacking target. Once the semifinal ended, the club’s sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali coordinated a rapid effort to secure the signing. Captain Reece James even helped make Chelsea’s case from within the England camp, and Cole Palmer – a close friend of Rogers – was kept in the loop. The strong relationship between Chelsea co-owner Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris helped finalize the agreement on Saturday afternoon, just before Rogers played in England’s bronze-medal win over France. After the deal was struck, Arsenal were given the opportunity to match the bid but told Villa they would stick to their own lower valuation, allowing Rogers to join Chelsea on those terms. Arsenal now plan to pursue alternative targets, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi. Rogers’ arrival also signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer approach. In his last interview in April, Eghbali acknowledged the club needed “to add more ready-made players at this part of the project, to take it to the next level, to be consistent over time,” adding that they learn from mistakes. Rogers already knows several Chelsea players – Reece James and Levi Colwill from the England setup, while Tosin Adarabioyo, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap all came through Manchester City’s academy. The friendship with Cole Palmer runs deep; Palmer’s trademark ‘cold’ celebration was originally performed by Rogers after a goal for Middlesbrough against West Brom. With Rogers and Palmer both versatile attackers, Chelsea's coaching staff will have the flexibility to deploy them together or separately as the team looks to build on its project.
