Illan Meslier agrees free transfer to Arsenal after Leeds departure
0
Illan Meslier is set to join Arsenal on a free transfer after being released by Leeds United last week, with the French goalkeeper expected to provide cover as the club's third-choice option.
The 25-year-old, who spent five years as Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper, will slot in behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order at the Emirates. His arrival would allow 20-year-old Tommy Setford to head out on loan for the upcoming season.
Kepa, currently serving as Raya's deputy, is understood to be open to leaving if a suitable opportunity to become a No.1 emerges. However, the Spaniard is in no rush to move and would only consider a deal that works professionally and for his family. As things stand, no concrete developments have taken place.
Meslier's stock has dropped significantly since his peak at Elland Road. He lost his starting spot to Karl Darlow late in the 2024-25 Championship campaign after committing three errors that directly led to goals. Last term, he didn't make a single first-team appearance, falling behind Darlow and Lucas Perri in the pecking order.
Arsenal's move for Meslier adds experienced depth behind Raya while resolving Setford's immediate need for game time.
