Newcastle's £100m Tonali Windfall Fuels Summer Reset – But Bruno Stays Priority

0
Losing Sandro Tonali was never part of Newcastle's blueprint, but the £100m Tottenham are paying has become the key to unlocking what the club hopes will be a transformative summer. This window under Eddie Howe could be as significant as his first January at the helm, with sporting director Ross Wilson preparing for six to eight new arrivals. The strategy is clear: sign young, hungry players and reset a squad that cried out for change after a difficult season. The cash generated by selling Anthony Gordon and Tonali gives Newcastle the firepower to chase their targets. Progress has already been made. Bazoumana Touré has joined from Hoffenheim for £42m – a fee at the top end of Newcastle's new price bracket. Fans will need to recalibrate expectations after dropping out of Europe, but the true measure of this window will be as much about who stays as who comes in. Attention now turns to captain Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal have been probing through intermediaries and are believed to have made an informal offer that fell short of Newcastle's valuation. Bruno is the heartbeat of the side, a player who embodies the supporters on the pitch. Unlike Tonali, whose camp pushed for a move, Bruno would be happy to fight for his place. Newcastle have no desire to sell him, but every player has a price – and losing him would be a devastating blow for the fanbase. Elsewhere, speculation around Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall has quietened. Livramento's injury issues and World Cup pullout make a move unlikely, while Manchester United's interest in Hall would require a fee few would match. Newcastle's willingness to sell hinges on finding suitable replacements: Johan Manzambi at Freiburg is seen as a Tonali-like option, while a forward is lined up to replace Gordon. A new goalkeeper remains high on the list – James Trafford is a priority after missing out last summer. Right-back is a target following Kieran Trippier's exit, and left-back cover for Hall may also arrive. A left-winger appears to be Toure, but the club are desperate for a proven No.9. More than £120m spent on Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade has yet to pay off. Will Osula could also feature after his strong end to last season. Newcastle are shopping in a different market this year: dropping from the £60m-£80m range to around £20m-£40m. That means scouring Europe for young talent – the same price bracket that brought Bruno, Gordon, Hall, Livramento and Sven Botman. It will be up to Wilson, in his first summer as sporting director, to repeat that success after last year's disruption when Paul Mitchell suddenly left.
