Manuel Akanji: 'I told the coach it was my last ever penalty'

0
Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji dropped a bombshell after his team's Round of 16 victory over Colombia at the 2026 World Cup. Following a 0-0 draw that went to a penalty shootout — which Switzerland won 4-3 — Akanji revealed he has taken his last spot-kick for the national team. "I told Muri [head coach Murat Yakin] that this was the last penalty I will ever take. I can't handle the nerves anymore," Akanji admitted after the match. The center-back stepped up and converted his attempt in the shootout, helping Switzerland advance to the quarterfinals. The game itself was a tense, tactical affair with neither side able to break the deadlock in regulation or extra time. In the shootout, Switzerland held their nerve, and Akanji played his part — but he made it clear that was the end of the road for him from 12 yards out for his country.
