Amorim Drops Bombshell: AC Milan an Even Bigger Challenge Than Man Utd

Ruben Amorim didn’t hold back in his first press conference as AC Milan head coach on Monday, dropping a truth bomb that left the room buzzing. The Portuguese tactician, who was sacked by Manchester United in January after a turbulent stint at Old Trafford, admitted that taking over at the San Siro feels like an even greater challenge than the mess he inherited in England. “After the last time, I promised myself to choose a smaller challenge,” Amorim said. “And yet here I am – it’s an even bigger challenge.” His comments came just weeks after being appointed to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed along with the entire sporting management after Milan failed to qualify for the Champions League. The Rossoneri moved quickly to back their new boss, shattering the club’s transfer record by splashing €74 million on PSG striker Goncalo Ramos. More upheaval is expected. Star winger Rafael Leao is likely to depart, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan is reportedly weighing his options as well. Amorim, 41, was shown the door at United after publicly criticising club director Jason Wilcox for offering tactical advice in a behind-the-scenes meeting. He insisted he should be called “manager,” not just “head coach.” That stance made his position untenable, and the club sacked him. Interim boss Michael Carrick then steadied the ship, guiding United to a comfortable Champions League qualification spot before being named permanent manager – a sequence that made Amorim’s exit look even more chaotic. Now at Milan, Amorim made it clear he’s not here for a rebuild – he’s here to win. “You can’t come to Milan without this mentality. I’m not naive, and I know we have a lot to do, but if you’re the coach of Milan, you have to play to win,” he said. He also referenced a 2017 interview in which he spoke about his childhood love for both Benfica and AC Milan. “I still remember spending hours watching tapes of Sacchi and Capello’s Rossoneri,” he said back then. “Now I’ll have to coach the Rossoneri.”
