Manchester United handed surprise chance to land dream midfield target as Real Madrid soften stance

United have already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to their engine room this window, but manager Michael Carrick still wants more cover in the center of the park after Manuel Ugarte was sidelined with a long-term knee injury. The club also has designs on a winger and a defender before the market closes, though another midfielder remains the front-office priority. After striking out on earlier targets such as Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, media reports that United have now 'made movement' toward reviving their interest in Brighton's Carlos Baleba, after being previously deterred by the Seagulls' valuation. Roma's Manu Kone is also on the radar as a cheaper alternative, with the Serie A side likely to ask for considerably less than the £80 million-plus Brighton once demanded for Baleba. Yet the midfielder United have always viewed as the ideal fit is Tchouameni. And according to media, Real Madrid have finally opened the door to his exit, even though the 26-year-old was reported to have agreed a new long-term contract with the Spanish giants. Madrid are themselves looking to bring in another midfielder but need to free up squad space first. Efforts to move on Eduardo Camavinga and Raul Asencio have so far failed, as both players have rejected offers. That deadlock has forced the Bernabeu hierarchy to reconsider Tchouameni's position. However, a deal for the France international would come at a steep price. His transfer fee would likely far exceed his €63.1 million Estimated Transfer Value, and his wage packet would place him among the highest earners at Old Trafford. Having already spent over €90 million on Santos and Tielemans, another nine-figure outlay on one player may be a stretch too far. Brighton originally quoted around €100 million for Baleba when United enquired last summer, but the 22-year-old's underwhelming campaign has probably lowered that figure. Kone, meanwhile, could be had for roughly €50 million as Roma face financial pressure, making the Frenchman the most affordable option. United have also 'expressed an interest' in former Nottingham Forest midfielder Danilo, currently at Botafogo, per the broadcaster, though Newcastle are also keen. Ultimately, the Red Devils continue to explore their options and hold talks over several targets. But the Tchouameni dream may remain just that unless Madrid dramatically reduce their demands — something they have yet to signal — leaving Kone or Baleba as the far more likely outcomes.
