Brighton & Hove Albion CEO Paul Barber has refused to rule out the possibility of Carlos Baleba joining Manchester United before the end of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has been widely tipped to join Michael Carrick’s side, after his failed transfer last summer, and it’s understood that negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing as Man Utd seek to finalise an agreement amid their pursuit of a third new central midfielder this summer.
The Cameroon international is expected to complete a move to Old Trafford shortly, as per multiple reports, with the Red Devils set to lodge a fresh bid after their opening proposal worth a rumoured €75 million was deemed too little by Brighton.
However, when asked if Baleba will join Man Utd before Transfer Deadline Day on 1 September, Barber told talkSPORT : “It’s not something that I can talk about right now.
“This time of year we’re always going to be subject to bids for our players, we’re always going to be interested in ones that are sensible and are going to make sense for us financially, economically.
“But we also have to balance that with making sure our squad is as strong as it can be to compete in competitions like the one we’re in.
“So nothing really to say on Carlos at the moment other than that he’s a hugely talented young midfielder who’s done really well for us and has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world now for a couple of years.”
Brighton have already sold Jan Paul van Hecke, Carl Rushworth, Diego Coppola, Danny Welbeck and Jeremy Sarmiento so far this summer, while they have turned down a bid worth just shy of €60m from Liverpool for Yankuba Minteh.
Carlos Baleba to join Man Utd?
There is growing optimism that a deal will be completed before the summer window closes and Man Utd are expected to add Baleba to a new midfield unit that now contains Kobbie Mainoo and summer signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
In addition, Carrick’s side also want to sign a new left-back and they have made an approach to sign Barcelona star Alejandro Balde, according to reports in Spain , with Newcastle United unwilling to sell top target Lewis Hall.
The Red Devils had been tipped to pursue a left winger too, however they look set to reintegrate Marcus Rashford back into the first-team fold instead.
