Manchester United Officially Land Goalkeeper Karl Darlow on Free Transfer

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who arrives on a free transfer after leaving Leeds United. The 35-year-old Wales international has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the option of an additional season. Darlow becomes the first player to make the direct switch from Leeds to Manchester United since Alan Smith back in 2004. He was available without a fee after his contract at Elland Road expired, having turned down a new offer from the Championship club. Leeds acknowledged Darlow’s departure with a statement on their official website, thanking him for three years of service but conspicuously not mentioning his new destination. The Whites also revealed that Darlow had rejected their contract proposal. The statement read: “Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road. Thank you Karl for your dedicated service to Leeds United, we wish you and your family the best for the future.” Darlow initially joined Leeds from Newcastle United in July 2023 and went on to make 38 appearances for the club – 24 of those came during last season’s Premier League campaign, where Leeds finished 14th and reached the FA Cup semi-finals under Daniel Farke. He is United’s second arrival this week, following the earlier capture of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a reported €58 million (£50m). Santos, 22, signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford. Speaking after completing his move, Darlow told the club’s official website: “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands. This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forwards.” Manchester United’s director of football Jason Wilcox added: “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.” Darlow is expected to provide competition for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, while the future of Altay Bayindir remains uncertain amid reported interest from Turkish clubs, according to insider sources.
