Manchester United Reveal Location for New 100,000-Seat Stadium as Plans for UK's Biggest Venue Take Shape
0
Manchester United have confirmed the location for their proposed new stadium, a 100,000-capacity venue that will become the largest in the United Kingdom. The ground will sit approximately 350 metres north-west of the current Old Trafford, though the club has yet to decide on the future of their historic home.
The announcement comes just over two weeks after United unveiled their initial vision for the project, which is set to dwarf Wembley Stadium's 90,000 seats and rank second in Europe only behind Barcelona's Camp Nou, currently being expanded to 105,000. The existing Old Trafford holds 74,879.
The new stadium is the centerpiece of the Trafford Wharfside Masterplan, a broader regeneration of the area surrounding the club's current base. Plans include a year-round hub for sports and entertainment, thousands of new homes, and major improvements to public transport, walking, and cycling links.
Club-released images offer a glimpse of what 'New Trafford' — as it is referred to in briefing documents — might look like, though officials stress these are not final. The design features an umbrella-style roof equipped to harvest solar energy and rainwater, and three masts that will make the stadium visible from up to 40 kilometres away. On a clear day, United believe the structure will be seen from the outskirts of Liverpool.
Construction is expected to take five years, with the club continuing to play at Old Trafford during the build. The new Stretford End alone will hold 23,500 spectators across two tiers.
