Rogers in, Palmer out? Chelsea's masterplan revealed

Chelsea have pulled off the biggest transfer of the summer, signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a staggering £117 million (€138m). The Premier League record fee brings a genuine superstar talent to Stamford Bridge, but it also immediately stirs up the conversation around Cole Palmer’s future. Rogers, an England international attacker, had been thriving in the No.10 role at Villa Park. His arrival at Chelsea inevitably puts pressure on Palmer, who has been the club’s creative heartbeat. Earlier this year, speculation swirled that Palmer was homesick and eyeing a return to Manchester, where he came through the City academy alongside Rogers. At Real Madrid, Alonso favored a 4-2-3-1, but during his hugely successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen he often used a 3-4-2-1, which would allow Rogers and Palmer to operate as twin No.10s. A 4-2-3-1 with Rogers on a flank is also possible – the winger has already shown he can play wide, most notably when he curled in the cross for Anthony Gordon to score England’s opener in the World Cup semi‑final against Argentina. Arsenal had also been planning to use Rogers as an auxiliary left winger before Chelsea hijacked the deal. With that kind of versatility, Alonso would be foolish not to exploit the pair’s friendship – the same bond that gave rise to the iconic “cold” celebration regularly seen at Stamford Bridge. Far from threatening Palmer’s spot, Rogers’ arrival looks more likely to cement it. The deadly duo is ready to roll once the new signing is up to speed after the World Cup.
