Eddie Howe departs Newcastle United in shock pre-season exit

Eddie Howe has decided to leave his post as Newcastle United head coach with immediate effect, bringing an abrupt end to his four-and-a-half-year tenure on Tyneside. The 48-year-old informed the club of his decision after Wednesday's 4-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Bristol City, a result that accelerated what had been an increasingly uncertain future. Howe was initially expected to remain at St James' Park despite a disappointing 12th-place finish in last season's Premier League. A post-season review had given him the go-ahead to continue, but the heavy loss at Ashton Gate appears to have shifted the manager's mindset. According to multiple reports, Howe wants to take a break from coaching and has stepped away amicably, with Newcastle's hierarchy understanding of his decision. Al-Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle has already emerged as the leading candidate to replace him. Talks with the 38-year-old German, who has won two Asian Champions League titles with the Saudi Pro League side, are at an advanced stage. The connection is natural: both Al-Ahli and Newcastle are owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Jaissle's move to the North East is considered a formality. Newcastle have been active in the transfer market this summer, spending €130.5 million on new recruits. Winger Bazoumana Touré arrived as the headline signing, while the club have sanctioned the departures of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Midfielder Bruno Guimarães is also in advanced talks over a switch to Arsenal. Howe leaves Newcastle having guided them to their first major trophy in 70 years - the 2025 Carabao Cup - and two Champions League campaigns.
