Aston Villa Land Alejandro Garnacho on Season-Long Loan from Chelsea

Aston Villa have officially completed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, bringing the Argentine winger in on a season-long loan with an option – or rather, an obligation – to make the move permanent. The deal comes just days after Chelsea smashed their club record to sign Morgan Rogers from Villa for €138 million, though both clubs have insisted the transactions are separate. Garnacho, 22, arrived at Stamford Bridge less than 12 months ago from Manchester United for €46 million, and the total fee Villa will pay if the buy clause is triggered is believed to be in that same ballpark. Chelsea confirmed the loan includes a conditional obligation to buy, tied to appearances. Should that clause be met, Garnacho will sign a four-year contract with Villa. Manchester United, meanwhile, hold a sell-on clause that applies only to any profit Chelsea make on the deal – which, given the similar fee structure, is expected to be minimal. “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy,” Villa boss Unai Emery said. Garnacho’s career has stalled over the past 18 months. After falling out with then-United manager Ruben Amorim, he was frozen out at Old Trafford and ultimately joined Chelsea in a late-window move last year. But his sole season in West London yielded only 14 Premier League starts, and whispers about his attitude and professionalism continued to follow him. Chelsea never forced him out or isolated him from the first team, but it was mutually agreed that he would not take part in Xabi Alonso’s first preseason as the club’s new head coach. Roma showed interest, but Villa moved quickly, leveraging Chelsea’s pursuit of Rogers to structure a financially favourable deal. The hope now is that Garnacho, once regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, can rediscover his best form at Villa Park.
