Mourinho's Real Madrid Overhaul: Short-Term Fix or Long-Term Gamble?

José Mourinho is doing what he does best-building a squad designed to win immediately, consequences be damned. At Real Madrid, that means heavy investment in experienced, high-wattage players at the expense of the club's promising younger core. Real Madrid turned to Mourinho after a disastrous 2025/26 campaign that saw them trail Barcelona domestically and implode off the pitch due to locker-room friction. The Portuguese manager, handed control of recruitment, wasted no time reshaping the squad. He has already secured deals for Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella (€55m), Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries (€20m), Liverpool center-back Ibrahina Konaté on a free transfer, and Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva (free) and midfield general Rodri (€50m fee, with wages reportedly matching that figure). Veteran center-back Antonio Rüdiger, who looked set to leave, has been retained. Four of those five arrivals are 30 or older; Konaté, at 27, is considered entering his peak. The signings are heavy on certainty but light on resale value-a classic Mourinho move. The most shocking splash, however, is the €135m capture of 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande. While that nod to youth is real, it's also a massive gamble: the fee is nearly four times his Estimated Transfer Value, placing much of the squad's future resale potential on his shoulders. Long-term fixture Rodrygo faces serious doubts about his future, and even Vinícius Júnior's place is uncertain amid a contract standoff. Franco Mastantuono and Endrick will almost certainly be sent out on loan. Mourinho has been hired to win now, and history suggests he will.
