Ronald Araujo to Liverpool: What the 'Darwin Nunez of centre-backs' will bring to Anfield

Liverpool are closing in on Ronald Araujo. According to Mundo Deportivo, the club have already agreed a loan deal with Barcelona that will bring the Uruguay defender to Anfield for the 2026/27 season. The switch is expected to ease Andoni Iraola's centre-back shortage after a pre-season in which the Reds looked thin at the back. The agreement, per the Spanish publication, was concluded in January and Araujo will become Liverpool's third summer arrival after Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet. Barcelona will allow Araujo to leave on loan, with Liverpool covering his €11m wages for the campaign. A purchase option for an undisclosed fee is also part of the arrangement. Araujo is a player of extremes. At his best, the 27-year-old is exactly what Xavi described as "one of the best defenders in the world": quick across the ground, brave in duels and fully committed. That upbringing, first in Uruguay and later in Barcelona's La Masia academy, taught him to play with a certain edge. He once told The media that his football education was about "commitment, bravery, the desire to help your family." Those qualities showed in big matches, especially in El Clasico, where he regularly got the better of Vinicius Junior. However, consistency has become the issue. In the 2024 Champions League quarterfinal against PSG, a costly red card after being caught out by Kylian Mbappe seemed to change the trajectory of his career. Injuries and mental strain have followed. Barcelona granted him a leave of absence in December 2025 after a sending-off against Chelsea in the Champions League, with Araujo later telling Mundo Deportivo: "It was an accumulation of things. It was not just related to sport." He returned six weeks later but lost his starting spot and played more than 45 minutes only four times in the second half of the campaign. Anfield Watch's Bence Bocsak sees the logic in the move, even if expectations should be measured. "Ronald Araujo is like the Darwin Nunez of centre-backs," Bocsak said. "On his day, he is unplayable. However, he can also be rash, make poor decisions and let emotions impact his performances." Bocsak does not expect Araujo to be an automatic starter, but notes that his experience and ability to play right-back make him useful cover. He also views the loan as a low-risk stop-gap, with Geovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet, Ndiaye and Ndukwe potentially ready to step up in 12 months. Liverpool's situation is also shaped by Jarrell Quansah's buy-back clause, which becomes active next summer. That gives the club options even if Araujo's loan does not work out, leaving them protected on multiple fronts.
