Fernandez’s future has been hotly discussed this summer, with the 25-year-old keen to link up with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca at City after the Blues missed out on European football for this season. City had been given a deadline by Chelsea to make an acceptable offer in excess of €130 million but the date passed two weeks ago without any deal being agreed. Chelsea had since been reluctant to consider Fernandez’s departure in fear that they would not be able to replace him but TyC Sports report that a deal has now been struck between the clubs. A fee of €140m is said to have been agreed, which would make Fernandez the second-most expensive signing of all-time behind Alexander Isak’s €145m move to Liverpool last year, having initially broken the British transfer record upon his arrival for €120m in 2023. The report claims that Fernandez will sign a contract until 2032 at City, with the option to extend it for a further year, although it remains to be seen whether English sources confirm the progress of the deal. Speaking after the match, Alonso denied that Fernandez’s absence was due to a request by him to sit out the game, saying: “We assess individually, collectively what's the best for the team, for tonight, what was better, for other players that were playing and we take the decision. “It was a decision from myself and from the club.”
