Romano and Plettenberg Clash Publicly Over Diomande Transfer Saga
0
What started as a routine transfer update turned into a full-blown public spat between two of football's most prominent reporters. The saga around RB Leipzig's Ivorian striker Jan Diomande took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as Fabrizio Romano and Florian Plettenberg exchanged sharp accusations over the 19-year-old's future.
According to Romano, Diomande has already turned down offers from Arsenal and Manchester City, while Paris Saint-Germain also pulled out of the race, leaving Real Madrid as the only serious contender. But Plettenberg urged caution, tweeting that no full agreement between Leipzig and Madrid exists yet. "If a deal was done, we'd know the exact fee. We don't," he wrote.
Romano fired back, accusing Plettenberg of spreading "fake news" about a €100 million Manchester City bid. Plettenberg then pivoted to what he called Romano's "embarrassing" handling of the Jürgen Klopp-to-Germany story, claiming the Italian posted a belated 'here we go' after the DFB had already announced the appointment. "Your report was based on probability, not facts," Plettenberg said.
The exchange escalated when Romano revealed that Plettenberg had privately asked him for advice on growing his following, adding: "Who are you to teach me now?" Plettenberg responded by promising to send Romano a Florian Wirtz No. 10 shirt if the player ever wears it at Bayern, and reminded him of the failed 'here we go' for Marc Guehi to Liverpool.
Despite the fireworks, no official confirmation of Diomande's move has emerged. The transfer remains in the rumor stage, with both journalists digging in their heels.
