Brazilian defender banned until injured opponent Gabriel Pec recovers: unprecedented ruling

Brazil's Superior Court of Sports Justice has handed down a rare and severe disciplinary decision. Internacional defender Victor Gabriel has been suspended indefinitely - until Cruzeiro striker Gabriel Pec is medically cleared to return to training. The horrifying incident occurred on July 22 during a Brazilian league match. In a hard challenge, Victor Gabriel fractured Pec's left tibia. The panel deemed a standard punishment insufficient given the severity of the outcome and charged the defender under Article 254 of the Brazilian Sports Justice Code, which covers violent conduct. A special provision in the code allows the court to tie the length of a suspension directly to the recovery period of the injured player. The ban is capped at 180 days by law, but it will be lifted immediately if Pec recovers sooner. The defense has indicated it will appeal. During the hearing, Victor Gabriel insisted the tackle was unintentional, saying he spent sleepless nights praying for his opponent and apologized sincerely to everyone at Cruzeiro. The decision was not unanimous. Judge Rodrigo Steinmann Bayer initially voted for a standard six-match suspension unrelated to Pec's recovery. But court president Jorge Octavio Lavocat Galvão, along with Eduardo Xible Salles Ramos and Aline Gonçalves Jatahy, backed the longer punishment, sealing the final verdict.
