Schalke striker Edin Dzeko has decided to end his career as a member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He announced this on Instagram. The 40-year-old Bosnian will play his last match for the national team in the League of Nations against Sweden - the game is scheduled for October 2. "Sometimes I caught myself thinking when this moment would come... But I could never have imagined how emotional it would be for me to write these words. On October 2, in a match against Sweden, I will play my next and last match for our national team. Nothing in my career will ever compare to the pride I felt every single day I put on that shirt. Nothing. It was a dream of my childhood, a dream that I carried with me on each of the 151 occasions when I had the honor of representing my country on the same football field. I have always been proud of it, just as I was the first time. Almost twenty years have passed since that match against Turkey. So much has changed and so have I, but my love for this t-shirt remains the same. Now I feel it is time to step aside. If I reached the age of 40 in the national team, it was because I really gave everything I had. Every time. All. Playing for my country was the most emotional opportunity football has ever given me. Qualifying for our first World Cup in 2014 remains one of the happiest moments of my life as a footballer. The emotions I experienced on the night of the Wales goal and then in Zenica against Italy in March will forever remain in my heart. Seeing my compatriots celebrating in the streets of our cities was another incredible gift that football gave me. It will be time to thank everyone who has been by my side and supported me throughout this wonderful journey. In the meantime, I just hope you'll be there that night against Sweden so we can share another emotion. Because we lived each of these incredible moments together. And this is how I want to spend my last night representing my country: with all of you by my side, in the shirt I've loved since I was a kid - and the shirt I'll love for the rest of my life," Dzeko wrote. Dzeko has been playing for the national team since 2006. He has 151 matches, 72 scored goals and 13 assists. Last summer, Edin represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, where the Bosnians reached the round of 16, losing to the USA (0:2).
