Arsenal close to sealing Bruno Guimarães transfer from Newcastle

Arsenal are closing in on a blockbuster deal to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães, with the fee expected to surpass €81.6 million (£70 million). The Brazil international has emerged as Mikel Arteta's top midfield target ahead of the 2026-27 season, and the 28-year-old is pushing for the move to the reigning Premier League champions before the summer window shuts. Guimarães, who has worn the armband at St James' Park for the past two years, has racked up 195 appearances for the Magpies since his arrival in January 2022. Last season he delivered nine goals and eight assists in 41 games across all competitions, and his strong World Cup showing for Brazil only reinforced his reputation as one of the English top flight's standout performers. Arsenal have already wrapped up permanent deals for Piero Hincapié, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, and now they are focused on adding Guimarães to a midfield that already features Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Depth would come from Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martín Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze. According to Jack Rosser of media, "Arsenal are close to agreeing a deal with Newcastle for Bruno Guimarães, fee just north of £70million." Newcastle have been reluctant to sell after already parting with Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer, but a transfer now appears imminent. Arteta recently underlined his ambition to strengthen the squad, saying: "We have identified where we have opportunities to grow and to improve and to evolve our game and what is going to be needed to achieve that. Hopefully very soon we can start to put things in a very concrete way."
