Alonso's Chelsea debut defined by four strikers as Joao Pedro hat-trick steals show

Xabi Alonso's first match in charge of Chelsea turned into a striker's showcase, with four different forwards shaping the narrative at Accor Stadium in Sydney. The Blues ran out 6-4 winners against Western Sydney Wanderers, but the scoreline only tells part of the story. The Brazilian forward, left out of his country's World Cup squad earlier this year, responded with a nine-minute hat-trick that underlined his power, pace and finishing ability. At the other end of the experience spectrum, 17-year-old Dastan Satpaev marked his first appearance - as a triallist, no less - with a stunning opener after just six minutes. The Kazakhstan international cannot formally complete his move from FC Kairat until August 12, but his impact was immediate. Alonso said he had been "really impressed" and noted his ability to attack the inside channel and his speed in the box. Liam Delap, however, endured another difficult outing. The striker, who joined for £30 million from Ipswich last summer, looks short on confidence and could now be sold. Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign veteran Danny Welbeck from Brighton as a more experienced alternative. Welbeck has agreed personal terms, though Brighton have not commented publicly. Alonso also confirmed that talks are ongoing with Brentford over midfielder Jordan Henderson, 36, as the club looks to add leadership following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
