Real Madrid's Least-Heralded Signing Is La Liga's Most Clinical Finisher
0
Real Madrid have made plenty of noise this summer, but their most intriguing addition may have arrived with little more than a quiet announcement. The club have activated Carlos Espi's €25 million release clause at Levante, handing the 21-year-old a five-year contract at the Bernabeu.
Espi was reportedly ready to move to the Premier League with Hull or Brighton before Madrid stepped in. Now he will be part of a new-look attack under Jose Mourinho, who wanted a center-forward with sharp movement in the box and real aerial presence, according to COPE. The Portuguese coach has been backed heavily in the market, and this time Madrid moved for one of Spain's most promising young No. 9s.
Espi did not arrive with the same billing as his new teammate Kylian Mbappe, but his numbers from last season demand attention. His 0.74 goals per 90 was the fourth-best mark in La Liga, trailing only Mbappe (0.87), Raphinha (0.85) and Robert Lewandowski (0.76). Ferran Torres rounded out the top five at 0.73.
According to data analytics firm SciSports, Espi was the most clinical finisher in the league among players who logged more than 500 minutes. It was quite the breakout, even if it happened away from the spotlight.
Espi's path was not a straight line. He scored six goals during Levante's La Liga 2 title-winning 2024/25 campaign, mostly as a substitute. Last season, once handed a starting role, he never looked back. He scored 11 league goals, with 10 arriving in his final 13 matches as Levante fought to survive.
At Real Madrid, he will likely return to a familiar role. He is not going to displace Mbappe in the lineup, but that does not mean he will be an afterthought. With Gonzalo Garcia joining Fulham, Espi gives Mourinho a different type of weapon: a brawny penalty-box striker capable of powering through games that require force rather than finesse.
Madrid have quietly secured a striker who understands what is expected of him. For all the glamour signings around the Bernabeu, Espi might be the one with the sharpest finishing instincts of them all.
