Valentin Barco's Chelsea arrival adds weight to Enzo Fernandez exit talk

Valentin Barco has joined Chelsea in a €40 million deal, and the Argentina midfielder's arrival at Stamford Bridge looks set to reshape Xabi Alonso's midfield. More importantly, it may be the clearest sign yet that Enzo Fernandez's time with the Blues is running out. Barco arrives to provide competition in the center of midfield, and his profile suggests he could eventually take the place of his compatriot. The 22-year-old, a former Strasbourg midfielder, has only six Premier League appearances from his spell at Brighton, but he made an impression in England during the World Cup when, as an unused Argentina substitute, he clashed with Jude Bellingham. That energy and edge should make him a quick fan favorite at Stamford Bridge. Barco might not have had much Premier League exposure, but Liam Rosenior, the former Chelsea manager, is credited with turning him from a left-back into a central midfielder. His numbers at Strasbourg show that he does most of what Enzo does, and often more. The exception is half-space receptions, which could be a concern for Alonso as he looks for ways to build from the back. In Barco, though, the former Real Madrid manager has a player who data analytics firm SciSports believes can surpass Fernandez over time in the right environment. Chelsea expert Cameron Smith believes Fernandez is the odd one out. Since arriving from Benfica in January 2022, Fernandez has been one of the club's best players, Smith says, but the evidence increasingly suggests he does not fit comfortably alongside Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo. His best spell came when Palmer was sidelined, which adds to the sense that the trio looks stronger on paper than it is in practice. With Palmer and Caicedo in the untouchables group, Smith thinks it makes sense for Fernandez to be sacrificed. Fernandez's open flirtation with Real Madrid in the spring showed he was unsettled. Barco's arrival is further proof that the former Benfica player's exit is only a matter of time. Real Madrid may currently have other priorities, including a club-record deal for Yan Diomande, but the momentum behind a Fernandez departure from Stamford Bridge continues to build.
