Danny Welbeck completes Chelsea move from Brighton

Chelsea have completed the signing of striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. The 35-year-old, who previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal, has signed a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge. Neither club has disclosed the transfer fee. Welbeck arrives after a career-best 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season. Only three English players managed more in the Premier League. He is Chelsea's third addition of the summer, following Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta. The move marks a shift in approach for Chelsea's owners, who have mostly recruited younger players since taking over in 2022. Welbeck's arrival also adds another layer of competition up front. Joao Pedro is regarded as the club's first-choice center-forward, with Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson also on the books. "When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride," Welbeck said. "I know a few of the boys already and I've had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection. I've got that fire in my belly and I'm ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud." Welbeck started his career at Manchester United and joined Arsenal for £16m in 2014. After five years in north London, he went to Watford and then moved to Brighton in 2020 after one season at the Hornets. He has scored 16 goals in 42 England appearances. His last cap came in 2018, and he was left out of Thomas Tuchel's 2026 World Cup squad. At 35, Welbeck may not fit the template of a club that has spent three years building one of Europe's youngest squads. Yet he offers something different. His 13 league goals came from 12.5 expected goals, and his big-chance conversion rate of 47.6% sits just behind Joao Pedro's 53.9% and ahead of Nicolas Jackson's 41.2% - Jackson spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich. Welbeck's movement remains a threat. He made 132 runs in behind last season and created 20 open-play chances, while almost half of his shots hit the target. Without the ball, he still works with Premier League intensity, averaging 32 pressures per 90 in the final third - comparable to Pedro and ahead of Jackson. Durability is another factor: 37 league appearances, 26 as starts. He may not redefine Chelsea's attack, but he gives Xabi Alonso another dimension: a selfless, tactically disciplined forward who links phases and presses intelligently.
