Chelsea enter negotiations for Brighton veteran Danny Welbeck

Chelsea have opened talks with Brighton & Hove Albion over a move for striker Danny Welbeck, with the 35-year-old forward eager to link up with new manager Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge. The London club are confident a deal can be reached, as Welbeck sees the move as an opportunity to bring leadership to a squad that finished 10th in the Premier League last season. The switch would also mark a notable shift in Chelsea's recruitment philosophy - influential owner Behdad Eghbali admitted in April that their model of signing only young players needed a "tweak," and Welbeck's experience fits that revised approach. The former England international enjoyed a career-best campaign in 2024-25, netting 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton. Since joining from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches for the Seagulls. Brighton declined to comment on the talks. Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension in March, tying him to the Amex until the end of the 2026-27 season. Chelsea's attacking department is crowded. Joao Pedro is viewed as the club's first-choice option, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson are also on the books. Guiu is available for a permanent transfer or loan, with Chelsea valuing him at around £25m. Jackson, who has returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, was expected to stay but is open to leaving amid interest from Aston Villa. Delap, signed from Ipswich for £30m just a year ago, hoped to establish himself under Alonso but is increasingly expected to depart. Emegha's future is also uncertain despite only recently joining from Strasbourg, a club within the same ownership group. Chelsea have already completed a club-record £117m deal for attacker Morgan Rogers, signed full-back Marco Palestra, and are closing in on a £52m move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Targeting Welbeck signals a clear strategic pivot. The Blues also attempted to sign 33-year-old Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka earlier this summer, only to be rebuffed by the Black Cats. While Rogers, 23, fits the younger-player profile, he brings considerable Premier League experience. Lacroix, 26, would add further top-flight readiness. However, Welbeck's arrival would leave Chelsea with an abundance of attacking options even without European competition this season. At his age, Welbeck may be content to serve as cover for Joao Pedro, but the move would spell bad news for Jackson, Delap and Emegha, all of whom hoped for more prominent roles. Alonso is getting what he wants: seasoned professionals and strong personalities to address the shortcomings that led to a 10th-place finish last term.
