Inside the transfer 'speed-dating' event that has produced 10,000 deals

TransferRoom's Madrid event is turning transfer business into a sprint. Club executives, agents and decision-makers are gathering at the Marriott Auditorium Hotel on Avenida de Aragon, with a format one Premier League executive likened to a GCSE exam. Each participant gets around 16 slots per day, requesting meetings with other attendees before the timetable fills up. The meetings take place at numbered tables, with a green digital clock on the wall counting down. When the bell rings three times, it is time to move to the next table. TransferRoom, founded in 2017 by Jonas Ankersen and Jeppe Gronnemark, is an online marketplace designed to make transfer business more efficient. Hundreds of clubs across the football pyramid use it to identify targets, list players for sale or loan, and arrange talks. Basic membership costs around £20,000, while the full package is around £35,000 and gives access to more tools, including deeper player statistics. Co-founder Ankersen says the platform has now completed over 10,000 deals, either online or in person. 'That's a milestone,' he said. 'It's basically 10,000 careers that moved forward.' Some high-profile moves have been completed through TransferRoom, including Viktor Gyokeres's transfer from Coventry to Sporting CP and Antoine Semenyo's switch from Bristol City to Bournemouth. Not everyone sees the event purely as a place to finalise deals. One scout suggested it is more valuable for networking, especially as clubs cut back on scouting departments. 'It saves a lot of time seeing people face to face,' they said. Kevin-Prince Boateng, now an agent, said he was stunned such a format existed, describing it as 'speed dating with transparency', where you sit opposite people who make decisions on the next superstar. Manchester United, Arsenal, Stuttgart, Ajax and Columbus Crew are among the clubs name-checked as being in attendance at the Madrid event.
