Why Harry Kane’s Historic Goal Haul Won’t Be Enough for Ballon d’Or Glory

0
Harry Kane produced what might be the most prolific goalscoring season in modern football history, netting 73 times for Bayern Munich and England during the 2025/26 campaign. That tally surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo’s personal best by one and stands as one of the finest individual achievements the game has seen. Unsurprisingly, bookmakers installed the 32-year-old as the frontrunner for the Ballon d'Or. Kane had already been the favorite before the World Cup after bagging 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern. During the tournament itself, Kylian Mbappe briefly overtook him in the betting, and Lamine Yamal also surged into first place before Ballon d'Or organizers issued a statement clarifying that World Cup performance alone would not decide the award: “Yes, winning the World Cup helps, but it does not guarantee a Ballon d’Or. To win it, you need to have been the best player of the season, not only of the World Cup.” That directive may sound clear, but the reality of how the 100 journalists vote is far messier. Recency bias plays a significant role, as do the PR campaigns run by clubs and players to sway opinions. Crucially, club trophies heavily influence the voting. And it is precisely at that point where Kane’s candidacy starts to crack. Kane’s 73 goals powered Bayern to the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles, yet both club and country fell at the semifinal stage — Bayern in the Champions League, England in the World Cup. More damningly, Kane was not even considered his own team’s outstanding performer in those runs. Michael Olise, Kane’s Bayern teammate, claimed the Bundesliga Player of the Season award and led France in World Cup assists despite struggling in front of goal. Meanwhile, Mbappe collected both the World Cup Golden Boot and the Champions League Golden Boot, both ahead of Kane. Those individual accolades will weigh heavily against the former Tottenham striker when voters assess who truly was the best player over the past 12 months. History shows that a strong narrative can override raw numbers. Luka Modric won the Ballon d'Or in 2018 despite Croatia losing the World Cup final, but he had just won the Champions League with Real Madrid. Journalists love a compelling story — it is why match reports sometimes open with a reference to the Trojan Horse before mentioning a goal. Kane’s story is simple: he is an extraordinarily efficient scorer. Much like Robert Lewandowski during his own Bayern years, there is no grand narrative attached. Following the World Cup final, Spain’s young duo of Yamal and Pau Cubarsi seized control of their own stories. They won La Liga with Barcelona and became the third- and fourth-youngest players ever to appear in a World Cup final, emerging as world champions. At 32, Kane represents the past; they represent the future. Journalists love to be ahead of the curve — backing Cubarsi early makes them feel prescient. Then there is the Messi farewell narrative. The Argentine legend dragged his team to the final, but his aggressive side could not overcome Spain. Messi had an excellent semifinal, assisting both goals against England — a match in which Kane spent more time defending than attacking. The Ballon d'Or organizers might tell voters to ignore such moments, but fresh memories are hard to erase come voting day. Rodri, too, has a case. The midfielder shattered his own record for most completed passes in a single World Cup. His Manchester City won no major silverware this season, but that only strengthens the narrative: imagine how mediocre City would have been without him. By contrast, would Bayern have missed Kane? Remove his 36 Bundesliga goals and they still would have scored 86 — 16 more than second-placed Borussia Dortmund. Kane was unquestionably the world’s best goalscorer in 2025/26. Was he the world’s best overall player? Possibly. But when it comes to winning the Ballon d'Or, he simply does not have the story.
