Romano: Right-back not a Liverpool priority at present

Liverpool are not prioritising a new right-back as the 2026/27 Premier League season approaches, according to insider. Right-back has been a problem position since Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid last summer. Jeremie Frimpong arrived as his replacement, but injuries limited him to just 12 starts in his first season at the club, and questions were raised about his defending. Conor Bradley also had constant fitness problems, which forced Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai into the role at times. Moving Szoboszlai out of midfield appeared to affect Liverpool's balance. Fans have made clear they want a specialist signed, but Romano says the club are not currently working on a deal for that position. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said he is not aware of any concrete movement despite reports. He did, however, point to centre-back as a position to watch. Liverpool look short at centre-back. Ibrahima Konaté left for Real Madrid when his contract expired, ending his partnership with Virgil van Dijk. Jeremy Jacquet arrived over the summer but has not yet made his debut because of fitness issues, while Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury. Gomez is the only other experienced option alongside Van Dijk, and he was injured in a pre-season friendly. A couple of weeks ago, Liverpool considered signing John Stones as a free agent, but Inter got there first. Most recently, they have been linked with Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio.
