Liverpool 's midfield could look quite different next year amid uncertainty over the future of Alexis Mac Allister .
The 2022 World Cup dropped a bombshell on Tuesday when he confirmed that the rumours of behind-the-scenes discontent are true. Mac Allister admitted to being "very sad" about, to date, not having been offered a new contract.
The 27-year-old is still tied to the Reds until 2028, but he feels that he should be next in line after seeing his midfield partners Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai get rewarded with fresh terms.
Mac Allister has been with Liverpool since the summer of 2023. After two outstanding first campaigns, there was a noticeable drop-off in his performances last year, perhaps giving the club second thoughts about the necessity of an extension.
Indeed, his long-term future at Anfield has been in doubt for some time. He was linked with Man Utd, Man City and Real Madrid this summer and confirmed that "there was a chance" to leave during the transfer window.
Liverpool's potential Mac Allister replacements
It is also no secret that Liverpool are attentive to the midfielder market. They were strongly interested in star earlier this year, but their Premier League rivals made it clear that he was not for sale.
Given the inflated prices paid for midfielders this summer, it seems that the Reds consciously decided against dipping into the market in hopes that things will calm down next year now that clubs like Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City and Tottenham have sorted out their engine rooms.
In addition to Wharton, Liverpool are keeping a close eye on other big names. Their interest in , who almost ended up at Chelsea this summer, is well-documented.
The Merseyside club reportedly told the Senegal international to "wait" and stay at for another year, so they clearly plan to make at least one midfield signing in 2027.
Transfer insider insider recently confirmed that Camara is one of Liverpool's top targets to replace Mac Allister should the Argentine indeed be on the move in the not-too-distant future. He has now revealed another name on the club's shortlist.
Responding to a question about possible January transfers during a Q&A on , Ornstein noted that Liverpool are admirers of star . "He came very close to joining Chelsea before they pivoted to Camara," he said of the Frenchman.
"And let’s see what position Roma are in at the time in terms of European football and financial compliance. He’s a player that is so highly rated. We saw him starting a lot for France at the World Cup, and he was looked at very heavily by Manchester United, Chelsea… I think Liverpool like him as well as one of their potential future options."
Expounding on his previous comment on Camara, Ornstein added: "Yes, Liverpool have some interest in Camara, which would be related to Mac Allister departing. There were rumours of Manchester City looking at him if they hadn’t signed Enzo Fernandez. I think there was some credibility to that. I don’t know if any sort of formal conversations took place.
"Liverpool would have had to look at options, even though they were only going to sign a midfielder, in spite of Curtis Jones leaving, if a further departure occurred. Camara was one option. I think there’s interest in Kone of Roma, and they’ll have other options as well.
"Don’t forget they’ve got Trey Nyoni there, who’s really impressing. His pre-season was strong, and I think they’ve got high hopes for him. There may be a new contract in the offing. But yeah, that interest [in Camara] was credible."
