The Italian has won six top-flight titles across his managerial career, including the 2016/17 Premier League title with Chelsea. He is also a five-time winner of Serie A’s Coach of the Year award and picked up the Premier League Manager of the Year prize during his stint at Stamford Bridge. Conte also had a storied playing career, much of which was spent with Juventus, where he notably won the 1995/96 Champions League as well as five Serie A titles. Defensive approach and focus on work rate While Conte has an excellent reputation and a track record of success, there are certain aspects to his coaching style and history that raise doubts over his suitability for the Manchester United job. He has been notorious for being a manager who has a big impact over the short term but struggles in longer stints. Across his managerial career, he has never spent more than three seasons with a single side. At the biggest clubs, this has been because he has typically failed in the Champions League. His playing style, meanwhile, is more conservative than what Man Utd have traditionally favoured. He prefers a 3-5-2 formation, which in itself would lead to major questions over its suitability for the current squad, where Benjamin Sesko is the only natural centre-forward. In addition to this, his teams are known for their high levels of athleticism and work rate, which is something that Carrick has not set this current squad to excel in – something that has drawn criticism. However, he is unattached and his ability to send an electroshock through squads to get the best from them is something that United will doubtless see as attractive as they target a top-four finish that would guarantee a return to the Champions League next season.
