Back in 2020, during his stint as Tottenham manager, Mourinho criticised the attitude of young striker Troy Parrott . The Irishman got his revenge on Friday, scoring the only goal of his home debut to consign his former manager to defeat. Parrott arrived on the field midway through the second half but took only 13 minutes to notch his first goal for the Seville side. The striker was quickest onto a rebound to fire his team to victory. Madrid’s misery was later compounded when Kylian Mbappe saw a stoppage-time penalty saved. But it was Mourinho who was left red-faced come full-time after his comments on Parrott from more than six years ago resurfaced. What did Mourinho say about Parrott? Mourinho previously criticised the attitude of Parrott, claiming that the striker felt he was too good to play academy football when training with Tottenham’s first team. He said: “I told him before the game: ‘Every time you play with the kids of your age, you have to show your colleagues why you are the privileged one.’ Because it was something he was not doing. Every time he was playing with the kids, he was playing with the mentality of, ‘I shouldn’t be here’ or, ‘I am too good to be here.’ “I had exactly the same words with Scott McTominay at Manchester United. He was not loved in his age group because he was not there with the right frame of mind. The moment we started changing that lots of things started changing for him. “Troy cannot go there [the under‑age teams] with discontent, contempt. It is a process. So everything goes very, very well. But this is a world where lots of people don’t even know if Troy has long hair or short hair, or is blond or is dark. They don’t even know that and they speak about Troy, Troy, Troy. There was a guy behind me on the bench the other day: ‘Play Troy, play Troy.’ I don’t think he knows Troy.” Parrott's career takes off Mourinho was subsequently the Spurs manager who sent Parrott out on his first senior loan assignments with Millwall and Ipswich, though the Dublin-born No.9 managed only two goals through 32 appearances as he struggled to make a mark even in League One with the Tractor Boys. It was during a similar spell at MK Dons the following season that Parrott started to show his potential, before moves to the Netherlands with Excelsior (on loan) and AZ for €4 million really brought the forward to life. Now 24, Parrott has embarked on his biggest move yet after being signed by Betis in mid-August for €16m, and by immediately getting one over on his former boss Mourinho, he could not have made a brighter start.
