Folarin Balogun set to make World Cup history after FIFA overturns red card suspension

0
Folarin Balogun is on track to become the first player in World Cup history to feature in his team’s next match after receiving a red card — a remarkable twist that has reignited debate around the tournament’s disciplinary rules. The United States striker was sent off in the round of 32 against Bosnia and Herzegovina following a VAR review for a reckless challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. A one-match ban seemed inevitable, but FIFA has agreed to suspend the suspension, meaning Balogun will be available for selection when the USMNT face Belgium in the last 16 on Monday. The decision came after a direct appeal from the White House, with President Donald Trump personally contacting FIFA to argue the punishment was excessive. In a post on Truth Social, Trump thanked FIFA for “doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice.” Balogun, who has scored three goals in three appearances so far, will now have the chance to add to his tally against Belgium. According to Opta, since the introduction of yellow and red cards in 1970, no player has ever received a red card and then played in his team’s subsequent World Cup match. Balogun would be the first. USA teammates reacted with relief. Christian Pulisic said the challenge had “zero intent” and praised Balogun for handling the situation professionally. Chris Richards admitted the squad initially thought the news was “AI at first” before realizing it was real. The Belgian FA, however, was far from pleased. In a strongly worded statement, the RBFA expressed astonishment at FIFA’s move, pointing out that Article 66.4 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly states a red card automatically triggers a one-match ban. They also cited the World Cup 2026 competition regulations and circulars distributed to all member associations, which reaffirm the automatic suspension rule. The RBFA said it is “investigating all potential options” to protect the principles of fair play, suggesting the matter is far from closed.
